New York City is a top destination for travelers worldwide who want to experience the busy city life and all of the attractions that this popular location has to offer. While it’s a given that travelers to the city will visit at least some of the main tourist attractions, to get a true New York City experience, visitors should try to do New York City like a local. Heading to some less-popular spots in the city will give a more authentic taste of The Big Apple.

Start your trip by getting a few of the must-see attractions out of the way. Pay a visit to Times Square, MoMa and the Empire State Building to see what all the hype is about, and to snap a few pictures of these iconic landmarks. Next, head to the spots where real New Yorks experience the city on a whole different level. The West Village is a great area to explore for visitors that want a glimpse into the history of the city, as many streets and parts of this neighborhood are the same as they were in the 19th century. Wander the streets to discover gems like boutique shops, the Magnolia Bakery and fun eateries.

The next obvious quest during a trip to New York is to find the city’s best pizza. Long-standing debates over which New York City pizzeria has the best pie have kept the competitive pizza-making businesses in the city alive. Travel around the city to a few of the local’s favorites, including Di Fara’s, John’s, Lombardi’s, Totonno’s and Grimaldi’s. A pizza tour of the city is not only a great way to try a few slices of New York’s finest dough, but also see parts of the city that a tourist wouldn’t normally see.

Besides the obvious art museum powerhouses in New York City, the Met and MoMA, New York has a vast number of other art museums and galleries that are worth exploring. The city is packed with artists eager to show their work for a nominal fee or gratis. Take advantage of this cultural capital by heading to gallery showings, or more permanent collections like those shown at P.S. 1, a modern art collection housed in an old public school.

Another reason visitors flock to New York City is for the phenomenal world-class shopping streets and stores. New York is a shopper’s paradise, with something for every occasion and style. While the most talked-about spots are 5th Avenue, Barneys and Macy’s, New York City has many more shopping areas that locals hit for their fashion needs. Bergdorf’s provides luxury shopping, while more budget conscious shoppers head to the Time Warner Center. Shopping districts around the city’s five boroughs are also home to more eclectic shops.

In addition to New York City’s thriving arts and shopping scenes, the city is also home to top music venues that book a variety of genres for live music performances. Seeing a show at the Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, Webster Hall or Terminal 5 is practically a rite of passage for New Yorkers, so visitors that want to experience music in the city should check the show schedules for these iconic venues. Book a Bronx vacation rental or a Brooklyn vacation apartment rental to get the comfort and privacy you need while exploring the city.
