Belleayre Mountain trail map | 1400 ft | 41 | 8 | Having the highest skiing elevation in the region, and a perfect northeastern exposure, Belleayre boasts the best possible natural snow coverage. Hunter Mountain trail map | 1600 ft | 53 | 11 | Hidden beneath the tumult, the crowds, the singles'' scene and the bee hive atmosphere lies one fine ski hill. Intermediate trails are plentiful and alluring, and there''s enough challenging terrain to keep advanced skiers very happy. High speed chairlifts have eased the lift line back-ups, but Hunter on a weekend is still crowded concoction of New Yorkers, Long Islanders and Jerseyites. One nice feature is a halfpipe lift ticket for snowboarders who want only to ride the pipe and terrain park. A full range of kids and family programs, plus an isolated beginner area called Hunter One, make Hunter a complete destination, but its reputation as a fast-action spot for twenty-somethings remains intact. |
Plattekill Mountain trail map | 1100 ft | 35 | 4 | At Plattekill Mountain our varied terrain offers something for everyone, from two-mile long beginner trails to some of the steepest slopes in the East! Our friendly, family-oriented, laid-back atmosphere can be felt when you step foot in our rustic ski lodge, and it's our mountain staff's ongoing challenge to offer our guests all the amenities while making you feel like family. The lack of lift lines and uncrowded slopes make Platekill the Catskills best kept secret. |
Ski Windham trail map | 1600 ft | 42 | 7 | Just a few miles north of Hunter, but worlds apart as far as atmosphere. The modern base lodge— among the most pleasant anywhere— and the generally simple trail layout make this a great place for intermediates and families. Beginners find safe haven on the far right side of the hill, while advanced skiers and riders who love speed will find steep cruising on the far left. Meanwhile multiple terrain parks keep teens happy whether they choose to board or ski. |

| GORE MOUNTAIN (Nearby Rentals) |
Gore Mountain trail map | 2100 ft | 65 | 11 | Gore is considered Whitefaces"sister" because they''re both operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), but that''s about as far as the relationship goes. Gore''s trail system bespeaks times gone by— tree-lined, they present twists and turns in a meandering texture. Gore does well by families (they''re day-care center is one of the east''s longest operating), and its new-found ability to draw water from the Hudson River for snowmaking promises improved and more consistent conditions. Lines for the lifts— the gondola in particular— can be long; but the views revealed during the ride up are worth the ticket price alone. |

Lake Placid/Whiteface trail map | 3430 ft | 75 | 10 | Twice the site of the Winter Olympics, Lake Placid offers a wonderfully quirky combination of small town Americana and international competition center. Whiteface boasts the East''s largest vertical drop (3,216 feet), but also harbors a reputation for being cold and icy. It can be that, but there''s something magical about whirling down the same slopes as Olympic racers and World Cup freestylists, and there''s something welcoming about the state-owned facilities with their smoke-free environment and small town friendliness. |
