Bear Mountain State Park by Beth Cadenas (originally published on Epinions.com) Bear Mountain is an easy drive from the city located about 45 miles north of New York City. Local lore states that Gov. Harriman's widow gave the mountain to the state of New York so they could make it a public park for everyone to enjoy. Of course, the locals will also tell you that the largest deposit of uranium in the country lies in the base of the mountain. True? I don't know. But it sure can make a great story. Bear Mountain is a wonderful place to take the family for a day of fresh air and sunshine. You can get there from the NYS Thruway (I-87) or the Pallisades Parkway. There's a wonderful lodge for overnight stays or to have a meal. There are picnic facilities and a swimming pool. There's a small lake where you can feed the ducks and geese that stop over on their migratory journey. I can remember being chased by a Canada Goose as a child. Never could go near the birds again after that! If you're lucky enough to have a boat, you can actually come up the river and moor at the dock that's provided. While you're at it, do some fishing in the Hudson River. My best memories of Bear Mountain are of the zoo and the nature walk. Yes, there are actually bears at Bear Mountain! And you can see them as you walk down the shady trail. You can also see raccoons, deer and other animals native to the Catskills. When I was a kid they had electronic boards along the path, where you could stop and dazzle your parents with your knowledge of local wildlife. This is the very first nature center in the state, so it's worth the trip just for that. Gives you bragging rights, ya know? The fun doesn't stop when the weather turns cold, either. There's some great cross-country ski trails, and even some ski jumps for the more adventurous of you. (Not for me, though. I'm an old person now. I have discovered fear.) For those of you who, like me, prefer a more sedate method of exercise, check out the skating rink that's open from late October through mid-March. If you're up to the challenge, head up to the top of the mountain and climb the tower. The views are spectacular! You can see for miles up and down the Hudson River. My brother and I used to swear we could see the Statue of Liberty from there. All in all, this is a great day trip for any family, and while you're in the area -- West Point is just a hop away, so take in that tour too!
