Like many other currently-chic (and astronomically expensive) Manhattan neighborhoods, Tribeca is a former warehouse district that enterprising artists converted into lofts.  From there, its mystique took off until it is now ranked as one of the most expensive addresses in the US.  But you don’t have to buy here - just renting a vacation home will do.

TriBeCa is the Triangle Below Canal (Street).  It borders Soho, the Hudson River, and the Financial District.  Its boundaries run from the Hudson River to Broadway and from Canal Street to Vesey Street.

First of all, there’s the film festival, which often leads to celebrity spotting - although plenty of important people call Tribeca home regardless of the time of year.  There’s great restaurants, parks, and architecture.  The Woolworth Building in particular is a standout, but it’s only one of several.  All in all, it’s a great place for a trendy vacation rental.
