Lake Ontario Area Vacation Rentals in Sodus

Sodus in the name of a town in Wayne County, in northern New York.  More importantly for vacation rental home seekers, it's also right next to Lake Ontario and near the Erie Canal.  It's approximately 35 miles to Rochester and 55 miles to Syracuse.

Sodus was founded in 1789, and its name is taken from a Native American term meaning “shining waters“.  According to some sources, Lake Ontario's moniker could also be translated as Lake of Shining Waters or Beautiful Lake.  The town of Sodus also includes the village of Sodus Point, which is covered in the Sodus Bay page.  If you can’t find your choice of vacation rental in the Sodus area, it's only 25 miles to Fair Haven.

While tourism - especially sailing, fishing, and other water-related activities - plays a large if unsurprising role in the local economy, it's not the number one commercial activity here.  That distinction goes to fruit growing, which Lake Ontario's unique microclimate makes particularly successful.  So, if possible, fruit-loving vacation rental seekers should try to time their visit to coincide with the harvest of fresh peaches, apples, and cherries that the region is famous for.
