Roxbury and Rural New York
Roxbury, a hamlet in the Catskills region of New York, makes much of its rural setting. Gazing at pictures of this area, words like ‘bucolic’ and ‘charming’ begin to float in your head, and if you’re inclined to stay in a place given to Victorian-era architecture, you’ll begin to hear a vacation rental in the town of Roxbury calling your name.
A vacation rental in the Roxbury area is a home run for history aficionados. Roxbury’s Main Street retains much of the feel of a 19th century town, while the steep hillsides of the hamlet of Grand Gorge provide a visual reminder of the mountainous setting. The hillsides taper down somewhat as you leave town and enter the farms of Vega Valley and Denver, where historic farmhouses mingle with modern homes.
If you’re interested in some typically Catskills recreations of a more active turn - such as skiing, hiking, and mountain biking - you won’t want to miss Plattekill Mountain. You can ski there during the snowy months, but it is especially noted for its summertime mountain biking and freeriding. Other Roxbury-area attractions include walking tours of the town, museums, and performing arts venues.
Getting There: Roxbury is approximately 80 miles southwest of Albany, 155 miles north of New York City, and 57 miles west of Catskill and the Hudson River.
