Explore Long Island’s North Fork:  Peconic Vacation Rentals

Peconic was formerly known as Hermitage, thanks to an elderly hermit who lived in the area.  Today, the name Peconic comes from local tribes; depending on who you ask, it either means ’little place’ or ‘nut trees’.  The town experienced waves of immigration, particularly from people of Polish or Irish descent.  The majority of modern ‘immigrants’ to Peconic tend to be vacationers, but they’re continuing a trend that started in the 1800s.  Notable guests of Peconic include Albert Einstein; the painters and artists that formed the Peconic School also flocked here in the very late 1800s.

Where:  Peconic is on Long Island between Southold and Cutchogue.  From here, you can access both Long Island Sound and Little Peconic Bay.

Peconic is about 45 miles from Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma - Islip.  The New York airports (JFK & LaGuardia) are more than 70 miles away.

What to Do and See:  With a heady blend of ocean sports, history, art, and wine, Peconic offers plenty of reasons for stopping by.  Vineyards and wineries play an important part in the economy and culture of this area; celebrate it by going on a winery tour and picking up a few bottles of the local vintage.  From your Peconic vacation rental, you can explore the entire North Fork of Long Island and beyond.
