Fire Island Destinations:  Ocean Beach Vacation Rentals

If Fire Island had a capital city - which, of course, it doesn’t - that capital city would be Ocean Beach.  From your Ocean Beach vacation rental on Fire Island, you can explore the whole of its 31 mile length.  Or you can stay local and enjoy your own slice of sandy beach and Great South Bay shoreline.

What and Where:  Ocean Beach is on the western end of Fire Island.  Lonelyville, Fair Harbor, Saltaire, and Kismet are to the west; to the east are the communities of Seaview, Ocean Bay Park, and Davis Park.  Fire Island National Seashore is also to the east; Robert Moses Sate Park occupies the western tip of the island.

Getting There:  While there are a couple of causeways that run out to Fire Island, most authorities recommend taking a ferry over.  The Bay Shore Ferry serves the Ocean Beach area.  If you don’t want to drive, feel free to leave your car and travel in via Long Island Rail Road, which stops in Bay Shore.

Ocean Beach is approximately 30 miles to Long Island Airport, 50 miles to JFK Airport, and 60 miles to LaGuardia Airport.  (These routes use the Bay Shore Ferry).

What to Do:  A vacation rental in Ocean Beach, whether it’s a cottage or an apartment, puts you in the middle of Fire Island’s busiest town.  You’ll also get the biggest selection of shopping, dining, and recreational activities.
