Sacandaga Lake Neighborhoods: Mayfield

On the northwest tip of Great Sacandaga Lake is the town of Mayfield.  Have you heard of it?  Probably not. It doesn’t have the name-recognition factor of resort towns like Saratoga Springs, about 40 minutes to the east.  But if you are looking for an off-the-beaten track place to enjoy a quiet stay at a vacation rental convenient to a lake and the Adirondack Park, Mayfield and neighboring Northville should make your short list.

What is so special about Great Sacandaga Lake?  It’s size, for a start.  The Sacandaga Valley was dammed in the early part of the last century to control the flooding of the Hudson and Sacandaga Rivers.  That massive building project resulted in an equally massive lake:  42 watery square miles, 125 miles of shore, 29 miles long from tip to top, and (at the widest) about five miles across.  It’s unusual shape stretches to within 20 miles of Lake George.

What is so special about Mayfield?  It’s the closest to the Adirondack Park.  In fact, Shaker Mountain is practically in the township’s backyard.  As anyone who has ever vacationed in the mountains knows, there are few straight routes to anything, so plan a little extra driving time when visiting the sites.  Vacation rental, hotel, resort, or summer camp - we hope you enjoy your trip to the Great Sacandaga Lake neighborhood!
