The Adirondack Lakes: Lake Placid

Choosing a vacation rental hovers between shopping for a hotel and selecting something more permanent:  find one you like, and you could be coming back year after year.  And if you’re a winter sports enthusiast, there’s not place like Lake Placid for your vacation rental.

Lake Placid has a distinction that few other towns can boast:  it has been the site of two Olympic Games, in 1932 and 1980.  Of course, the 1980 Olympics are famous for that miracle upset victory of the US team over the then all-powerful USSR team - hockey fans will make the pilgrimage for that fact alone.  But winter sports are taken so seriously here that the Olympic training facilities in active use.

There’s a bit more history than just the Olympics in Lake Placid.  There’s also the farm and burial place of noted abolitionist John Brown, which is a state historic site.

In the summertime, Lake Placid remains active, this time as a water sports hotspot.  Fishing, in particular, is popular, and the lake is famous for its trout.

Lake Placid is about 50 miles southwest of Plattsburgh and Lake Champlain.  It’s also approximately 140 miles north of Albany and 290 miles north of New York City.
