Kingston:  Capital Fun

If the early New Yorkers had their way, the capital of New York would be Kingston, and not Albany. (And you knew it wasn’t NYC, right?  Just checking.)  The town of Kingston was founded in 1652 by Dutch settlers and was capital of the state until 1777.  This means that Kingston has hundreds of years of history, some of it - in the forms of pre-Revolutionary War houses - still visible.

While Kingston is proud of and carefully protective of its heritage, it’s not stuck in the past.  It has its share of quirky museums, like the Trolley Museum of New York.  But it is also home to more than half a dozen art galleries and the seat of the Ulster County Arts Counsel.

Another facet of Kingston heritage is emphasized by the Hudson River Maritime Museum and more recently by river tour companies.  There’s at least four choices if you opt for a river cruise, or you can take in the river by hiking or driving along its banks.

Selecting a vacation rental in Kingston makes sense not only because of its size and diverse attractions but also because of its location.  Newburgh’s Stewart International Airport is about 40 minutes away; Albany is one hour north and New York is two hours south.  Not only will your vacation rental be a pleasant change, it will also be handy to several airports. That’s what we call a good idea!
