The Many Facets of Indian Lake

Indian Lake - both a town in Hamilton County, New York, and a sizeable lake - is located between Blue Mountain and Hudson Gorge; Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest is also nearby, but Indian Lake is often a destination in its own right.

Why, you ask?  Is it the number of vacation rental homes and summer places available?  Is it the fishing, the hiking, the water sports?  Is it the scenery?

The short answer:  Yes.

Indian Lake - we’re talking about the town, now - has a population of about 1,400 people, which makes it the largest town in Hamilton County.  Blue Mountain Lake and the hamlet of Sabael are also located near Indian Lake, the body of water.  What makes this place so appealing for vacation renters, summer tourists, and even weekenders is the combination of attractions mentioned above.

The network of trails around Indian Lake means you can hike about 300 miles if you’ve a mind to; all that water just cries out for fishing and boating.  If you’re feeling really adventurous, the mighty Hudson makes its presence felt in the neighborhood by way of the Class III and Class IV rapids.  In other words, Indian Lake offers everything from a lazy float on the lake to a rush downstream on the Hudson.
