Exploring the Berkshires in Hillsdale

In the Berkshires, the scenery often has the effect of making you itch to dive into a thesaurus and look up synonyms for beautiful.  So whether you’re describing the pastoral rolling hills, the verdant trees, or the sparkling streams, it comes down to this:  the region is just plain pretty.

Hillsdale, at the eastern edge of New York State, makes a great place to get a vacation rental and explore this area.  It’s 10 miles west of Great Barrington, Massachusetts and 17 miles east of Hudson, New York and thus the Hudson River.  So, with one conveniently located vacation rental, you can see the best of several states.  Incidentally, Albany and its airport are only 55 miles away, while New York and its airports are 120 miles south.

If skiing is your thing, the Catskills are an hour east, but there’s no need to travel all that far.  Hillsdale is home to the Catamount Ski Area.  Although primarily a ski destination it does have a nifty Adventure Park at the foot of the mountain for the non-snow months.  It’s not an amusement park in the style of Six Flags, with roller coasters and the lot.  Instead, it’s a sort of aerial pathway through the trees.
