Hancock, NY:  Welcome to the Upper Delaware River

Billed as the “Gateway to the Upper Delaware River”  Hancock sits both on the border of the New York and Pennsylvania state line and on the Delaware River itself.  This is a particularly important spot in the river’s geography; it is where the West Branch of the Delaware River, with its source in Mount Jefferson, meets the East Branch of the Delaware, flowing from its source near Grand Gorge.  United, they flow to meet the Atlantic Ocean.

There’s plenty to do along the banks of the Delaware.  Hancock, with its combined population of about 3,000 (adding the village and the town), offers several opportunities.  These include fishing for trout, hunting, and canoeing.  New York’s Route 97 offers one of the country’s great scenic stretches of road for casual viewing; for a more personal (and calorie-burning) look, there’s also hiking and biking.  Being set at the edge of the Catskills, taking an ATV up mountain trails is also a popular activity.  And - like any other US town of any size - there’s a golf course as well.
