Explore Long Island’s North Fork: Greenport Vacation Rentals
What can you do during a North Fork getaway? From your Greenport vacation rental, quite a lot! Greenport is in the eastern section of the North Fork region, but you can still experience all of this area of Long Island from one convenient place.
Where: Greenport is just south of the town of East Marion. To the west lie the villages and hamlets of Aquebogue, Jamesport, Southold and Peconic. Shelter Island is separated from Greenport by the merest stretch of water.
On the flip side, the Islip-Ronkonkoma area (site of Long Island MacArthur Airport) is about 50 miles away. The New York airports are closer to 90 miles to the west.
What to Do and See: Greenport has a history of maritime activity that is rather varied. Basic shipping and commerce gave way to whaling and boat-building. By the time Prohibition rolled around, Greenport was also a popular spot for a bit of rum running (aka importing illegal booze). You can revisit much of the area’s past at local museums. You can also visit nearby lighthouses in Southold and Orient. And a stay at a Long Island vacation rental wouldn’t be complete without touring the area’s wineries and vineyards.
