Quick Facts About: Croghan, New York

Located in upstate New York and handy to the Adirondack Mountains, the St. Lawrence River, and Lake Ontario, Croghan is a small town that takes welcoming visitors seriously.  Although it has less than 4,000 inhabitants, the town’s website is full of attractions to lure the potential visitor to find out more, at the very least.

Founded in the middle of the nineteenth century and set in a forest-rich area with access to running water, it’s hardly surprising to know that Croghan had its very own water-powered mill.  More surprising perhaps is that it is still there today.  The Island Mill is just that, occupying its own little island, and still supplying lumber and wood to builders.

Other aspects of Croghan’s blend of past and present are easily visible.  There’s plenty of old-school shopping opportunities, including a general store, a bakery, and Good Ol’ Wishy’s: a genuine soda fountain, milkshakes optional.  If a serious sweet tooth hits, head over to the Candy Kitchen to sample one or more of the 30 varieties of handmade chocolates.

Few small towns come complete with hotel, but for vacationers intent on enjoying slower-paced Adirondack life, a vacation rental makes an excellent substitute; it’s no coincidence that the Adirondack area has specialized in hospitality like vacation rental homes for decades.  Whether you plan on fishing, canoeing, or eating chocolate, Croghan welcomes you!
