Chatham: A Town That Wants You to Call It Home
According to its website, Chatham, New York, is a warm and welcoming town, eager to embrace local residents, vacation rentals and vacation home owners, and their guests alike. A vacation home rental in this neighborhood offers a taste of some rapidly-disappearing small town flavors, nestled in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. If the call of the wild strikes, you’re not all that far from Borden’s Pond Conservation Area. Also nearby is the Massachusetts state line. Stockbridge and Pittsfield are 30 and 45 minutes away respectively. The Hudson River is within half an hour and the Catskills are two hours away. Finally, that granddaddy of urban life, New York City, is two hours drive to the south.
However, visitors to Chatham are very much encouraged to participate in the town’s commerce, activities, and history. One of the first things you’ll notice is the historically accurate buildings lining the streets; these aren’t reproductions, but the real deal. The highlights, included in the walking tour, range from a hotel that once hosted US President Martin van Buren to a hotel that was a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt’s. Also neat is Crandall Theatre, which is one of the few independent movie houses in the country that still sells first-run movies.
Chatham has a mood for every season: in April the apple blossoms are recommended; there’s a Summerfest and a Winterfest, and featured sales and live music year round. Whether you’re in a mood for the great outdoors or the delights of a small town, Chatham wants to meet you!
