All About Blue Mountain Lake, New York

Blue Mountain Lake, both a geographical feature and a community in New York’s Adirondack Mountain region, has been drawing tourists for well over one hundred years.  The home-away-from-home base of wealthy industrialists in the nineteenth century, these mountains are now the choice for many vacationers, both of the winter and summer varieties.

Blue Mountain Lake is a gorgeous blue-filled bowl, part of a chain of lakes that includes Eagle Lake and Utowana Lake.  Another famous lake, Raquette Lake, is nearby.  This means that the area is home to numerous watery activities, from boating to ice fishing.  History buffs will be glad to visit the Adirondack Museum in the town of Blue Mountain Lake.   It’s considered one of the best museums in the region.  Here, the story of this part of the Adirondacks unfolds, from the area’s working inhabitants to those heady days of wealthy investors and railroad plans.

While vacation home rental enthusiasts can certainly be accommodated in the Blue Mountain Lake area, don’t be discouraged if your number one choice is booked.  Technically, the village of Blue Mountain Lake is part of larger Indian Lake.  Many towns provide access to the best of the Adirondacks, both peak and pike.  And, when you’ve hiked the mountains, fished the ponds, and traveled the scenic byways, remember there’s a reason that this area has become famous for a certain influence on furniture; it may be time to kick back with a drink, settle onto the porch of your vacation rental, and let the world go by.
